VA Study Indicates That In-office Procedure Ineffective for Colorectal Cancer Screening

A January 18, 2005 study in Annals of Internal Medicine examined the effectiveness of in-office FOBT or digital rectal exam (DRE) in detecting polyps and cancers. This study was performed by 13 VA Hospitals on nearly 2600 patients.

The conclusions were that testing utilizing stool obtained after a DRE in the doctor's office is ineffective for the detection of colorectal cancer or large polyps. Physicians should be recommending the take-home stool test which requires the patient to take 2 samples on 3 consecutive stools (6 samples).

One of the supporting reasons was the intermittent bleeding of colorectal cancers and polyps.

More Than 41 Million Americans Need Colorectal Cancer Screening

A December 2004 study published in the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) journal Gastroenterology, indicates that 41 million people have not received adequate CRC screening. This study performed in conjunction with the Center of Disease Control (CDC) was the first time this number was determined.

The study also considers the various recommended CRC screening mechanisms and their impact reducing this number. Based upon the capacity to perform colonoscopies, it would take 10 years to address these 41 million patients. With the use of fecal occult blood test (FOBT), this backlog could be addressed within one year.
